If the Spirit Moves
October 5th, 2007 by Sonja

I had my hair done yesterday. It’s something I’ve only recently begun treating myself to. This is a lengthy process that allows me substantial time by myself to meditate in the chair. I suppose I could bring a book and read. But usually I just close my eyes, rest and meditate. Today I found myself praying. It was simple prayer. Slowly I became aware that U2’s “Mysterious Ways” was playing. I heard it again as if for the first time. And I suddenly realized … Bono is singing about the Holy Spirit. Rock ON! And I continued praying.

Mysterious Ways

Johnny take a walk with your sister the moon
Let her pale light in to fill up your room
You’ve been living underground
Eating from a can
You’ve been running away
From what you don’t understand…
Love

She’s slippy
You’re sliding down
She’ll be there when you hit the ground

It’s alright, it’s alright, it’s alright
She moves in mysterious ways
It’s alright, it’s alright, it’s alright
She moves in mysterious ways

Johnny take a dive with your sister in the rain
Let her talk about the things you can’t explain
To touch is to heal
To hurt is to steal
If you want to kiss the sky
Better learn how to kneel

(on your knees boy)

She’s the wave
She turns the tide
She sees the man inside the child

It’s alright, it’s alright, it’s alright
She moves in mysterious ways
It’s alright, it’s alright, it’s alright
She moves in mysterious ways
It’s alright, it’s alright, it’s alright
Lift my days, light up my nights

One day you will look…back
And you’ll see…where
You were held…how
By this love…while
You could stand…there
You could move on this moment
Follow this feeling

It’s alright, it’s alright, it’s alright
She moves in mysterious ways
It’s alright, it’s alright, it’s alright
She moves in mysterious ways
It’s alright, it’s alright, it’s alright

We move through miracle days
Spirit moves in mysterious ways
She moves with it
She moves with it
Lift my days, light up my nights

If you feel like praying today … you could too. I’m heading to court with BlazingEwe. We’re providing moral support for TexasBlueBelle, BlueMan and their neighbors as all those Peace Order cases are heard.

She moves in mysterious ways …

Always worth reading the lyrics again but they just prepare you for the dynamism of the rift that the Edge kicks off with – so i’ll pray that the difference between the words and the music is the difference you’ll experience

This song is one of U2’s most misunderstood tunes, second only to “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For.” U2 calles the Holy Spirit “She” whihc many traditionalists object to, but he says he has always thought of the spirit as a feminine thing, and lo and behold, the word used in the greek for the holy spirit is a feminine noun.

Also, “Johnny” is a reference to John The Baptist… another interesting tidbit. Good post!

I’m embarrassed to say, as someone who went to highschool in the 80’s, that I never liked U2. I just didn’t like their sound.

I even passed up an opportunity to attend a U2 concert. *GASP*

But now, as I enter my 40’s, after finding out about the meaning of some of their lyrics (plus all the things Bono has been doing), I’m finding myself really liking them.

    Thanks for posting this.

hehehe … I still remember when the video for “New Years Day” came out. I loved the music and still do. But I couldn’t get over the lead singer, he was such a doofy looking character back then. They’ve been the music of my adult life … but I went to highschool in the 70’s (gack).
